More than a night on the town

It wasn’t so long ago that most bachelorette parties had one thing in common: drinking. The bride’s last night on the town as a single woman was celebrated with a group of rowdy girls crammed into a limo, wearing all sorts of wacky clothing, and stopping at as many local bars as the night allowed. The success of the evening depended on how much the bride and her friends imbibed by the time the limo dropped them off.Today’s brides, however, are starting to redefine the bachelorette party. Many want a more intimate setting to relax and enjoy the company of their best friends. Others want to do something different.Following are three increasingly popular bachelorette parties that local brides-to-be and their friends are choosing:Wine toursFor Buffalo area brides-to-be, wine tours are especially fruitful along the Niagara Wine Trail in the U.S. and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.Margo Sue Bittner, owner of The Winery at Marjim Manor (marjimmanor) has seen an increasing number of bachelorette parties visiting the winery in Appleton (Niagara County). One reason may be the reasonable price. “We offer a $5 special for all tasting groups of six or more,” said Bittner. “Patrons get to taste our wines, receive a complimentary signature wine glass and can take advantage of 10 percent savings on any wine purchases.”To add to the experience, “we have a great ghost story,” said Bittner. “It is something we find our visitors truly enjoy hearing and it adds to the overall tasting experience.”Marjim Manor is just one of the many wineries along the Niagara Wine Trail that is a destination for bachelorette parties. Many recommend that groups contact them in advance because the wineries may have special tours or tasting rituals that can be arranged for the visit.A day at the spaWhile some brides like to celebrate with large crowds and loud music, others prefer a  more tranquil environment. Tammy Pollino, co-owner of KaLu Spa , Salon in Amherst (kalusalonandspa), said that spa bachelorette parties are perfect because they allow brides to include those not normally included in the bar scene.
