What do gender and transgender identity mean?

The term gender identity refers to the gender (s) with which a person identifies. Those people whose gender identity goes against our cultural norms are called transgender.

How can it affect life?

Many transgender people discover as children that their gender does not suit them. The emotion that you feel that your gender identity and your body do not match is called gender dysphoria. That other people do not see what you are inside can cause anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

Many transgender people feel good and do not suffer because of their gender identity. But at the group level, studies show that transgender people, particularly young people, have mental disorders to a greater extent than the general population. It is common for them to have depression. 40 percent of young transgender people have attempted to kill themselves.

It's hard to feel different and lost, and emotions such as shame, exclusion, and instability are common. One in five transgender people has been exposed to violence due to their gender identity and half have been subjected to humiliating treatment. Transgenderism is not always accepted in our society and much work remains to increase tolerance and combat harm.

What kind of help can you get?

If a mental disorder arises due to gender identity, you should seek help. Everyone has the right to be themselves and feel good about it. Contact an outpatient or psychiatric office if you or a family member feel depressed or unwell in any way. There, guidance is also given to those who want to correct their body.

What is a gender assessment?

Before undergoing a sex change and eventually also changing your gender legally, you need to undergo a gender assessment. The process takes at least two years and the objective is to establish a diagnosis and then determine the changes that best suit the person and their body.

The first thing you need is a referral, which can be obtained from an outpatient or psychiatric office. Requesting medical assistance does not imply that someone is sick, but rather requires the skills that exist in medical assistance. You do not need to know your gender identity or know what kind of change is desired when requesting a gender assessment.
