Traditionally India has been the country that sends rather than receives international students. But numerous students from other countries now choose to study in top universities in India. And India now welcomes more than 50,000 international students every year.

The fact that India’s higher education system has expanded rapidly over the past few decades is unsurprising. It has the second-largest population in the world. And it is a fast-growing influential economy. After the US and China, the country has the largest higher education system in the world. To a person not from India, the education system might also seem one of the most complexes. Top universities in India are primarily segregated into government, deemed, open, private, national organisations depending on their funding, infrastructure, faculty, accreditations, university management, global collaboration, placement opportunities, entrepreneurship, etc.

India is ranked 26th in the world in the QS’s Higher Education System Strengths Rankings assessing the higher education systems within each country. There are 23 IITs located across the country and their primary areas of focus are engineering, science, and technology disciplines. In the latest QS World University Rankings, IIT-Bombay is the top university in India, featuring at 172. Indian Institute of Science follows at 185, and IIT-Delhi is the third Indian university at 193.

Top universities in India rankings place mainly the IITs and the IISc in the top. Apart from the engineering, technology, and science specialists, some of the highest ranked comprehensive Indian universities are the University of Delhi and University of Hyderabad ranked 7th and 8th respectively, University of Calcutta and Jadavpur University at 11th and 12th positions respectively, Savitribai Phule Pune University at 14, Anna University-Hyderabad and University of Mumbai ranked 16th and 17th respectively, Benaras Hindu University at the 19th place, at 21st is Jamia MilliaIslamia, 23rd positioned Symbiosis International Deemed University, and many more.
