Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine has been in existence for thousands of years and its effectiveness has been well recognized in India, the country where it originated. Despite the opposition of a number of medical practitioners, this form of medicine has been gradually gaining wide acceptance in the Western world. These members of the medical profession have slowly acknowledged this ancient form of medicine in large part due to the numerous clinical trials that have shown positive results.

Various studies can in fact be found that supports this position. Insofar as lifestyle diseases are concerned, here are some clinical studies that have found Ayurvedic Medicine effective.

Ayurveda and Arthritis

Results of a clinical trial was reported in 1992 in the medical journal Medical Hypothesis that a formulation unique to Ayurveda was able to reduce significantly the pain, swelling, discomfort, and other symptoms associated with arthritis in at least 75 percent of the participants. All the participants were diagnosed to be suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and the other common conditions falling under the category of arthritis. It may be significant to note that all patients who were included in the study did not report any adverse reaction after taking the medication.

Ayurveda and Heart-Related Diseases

Various treatment programs of Ayurveda which were used in several clinical studies have also shown to be effective in addressing heart-related conditions. A 1993 study revealed that over 80 percent of the participants experienced an increase in dilation capacity with regards to their circulatory system after just three months of treatment. A significant reduction of cholesterol, a prime risk factor of heart disease, was also noted in the study.

Another study in 1994 also reported that a bark preparation given to patients resulted to a 50 percent decrease in angina episodes in 80 percent of the participants. These findings were supported by another study carried on the same year in which it was found that Ayurvedic medicine paved the way for the reduction of frequency in angina attacks and also the decrease in the need for medications.

Ayurveda and Cancer

A number of clinical trials performed in the United States have indicated promising results in the use of Ayurvedic medicine in conjunction with the very common cancer. A metabolic tonic that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine has demonstrated to have inhibited cancer cells significantly. A 1991 study involving rats also showed that tonics in Ayurveda were able to reduce human melanoma cell growth.
