High school years are important formative years in a student’s life and often act as a deciding factor while choosing higher studies. Teachers and parents alike need to invest a lot of time and energy in the student’s life during these years to help them balance their academic and emotional growth, as well as guide them in the right direction.

Getting involved and showing interest in the teen’s high school years, boosts them with motivation and much-needed push.

TIPS FOR PARENTS TO MANAGE HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN

  1. Attend regular meetings

Parent-teacher meetings play an important role in understanding the development of the student. They give you a brief overview of how the student is fairing in the school. Teenagers perform better in school if their parents are constantly involved and are encouraging to them. Staying in constant touch with the teachers

  1. Support

Parents should support their teens in doing their homework and projects. This gives them a motivational boost and keeps them focused. Help your high school going teens to stay focused and to plan their day. Help them strike a good balance between school life and social life. The teen should always feel encouraged and supported by their parents. This really boosts their morale and develops a healthy parent-child relationship.

  1. Know the school policy

Parents should be well versed and accustomed to school policies. These policies include bullying, ragging, harassment, etc. High school is the time where a student learns to grow, they meet new people and develop relationships. So a parent must be well aware of the school policies to remain aware of the situations that may develop in the future. The student as well as the parent should be aware of the consequences if a certain rule is broken. They should be ready with responses which will help them manage the situation better.

  1. Understand stress

There is no second thought to the point that high school is a time that builds up quite a lot of stress. The student is going through a transitional phase, they are meeting new people, trying to make friends. All this is done with a lot of studies alongside. Thus the parents need to be supportive. They need to understand the stress and help the teen by talking them through it. It is important to make such an environment at home which makes the high schooler feel comfortable. This will develop a good relationship.

TIPS FOR TEACHERS TO MANAGE HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN

  1. Get to know the students

On the very first day of high school, before starting any lecture or any classes. Take one or two days to completely know the students. Familiarize the names and make the students feel comfortable. Once you build up a rapport with them, the classes that you take in the future will seem effortless. Striking a good bond between teacher and students helps develop a good relationship.

  1. Motivate!

More than teaching a particular subject and finishing up the syllabus, the teachers should constantly motivate the students. High school is the place where the students will start developing a clearer goal for their future. These are the formative years and thus it becomes increasingly important to keep them focused on their goal. Motivate the students occasionally.

  1. Activities

Every now and then, engage in activities. Activities are a good way to break the monotony of regular classes. A simple potluck session, celebrate birthdays, celebrate someone’s achievements. These small activities will boost the confidence of high school students. It is also very important to give the students their space and make them feel comfortable.

High school is a new beginning that opens the door to the future. Thus, engaging and maintaining a good relationship with the students really helps them stay focused and enjoy the high school experience.
