Magnetic Bands Can Provide Acid Reflux Relief

When chronic acid reflux is a concern and over-the-counter medications offer little relief, the potential for long-term complications may run high. While doctors can prescribe stronger medications and recommend lifestyle changes to combat the symptoms of reflux, a relatively new surgical intervention may deliver the long-term relief patients need.

Known as the LINX system, this surgical procedure involves the placement of a titanium-encased magnetic bead system around the lower section of the esophagus. The beads are put into place to fit loosely around this section, where reflux is often caused by a weak sphincter muscle that remains open after people swallow. This post-swallowing opening enables stomach acids to backflow into the esophagus, causing a host of painful and often dangerous symptoms.

LINX was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2012 and has since produced tremendous results for many suffering with the pain and discomfort associated with acid reflux and chronic GERD. The system works by forcing a closing of the sphincter after food is swallowed, effectively blocking stomach acids from back flowing.

The LINX system is put into place using a laparoscopic surgical procedure. It generally takes about an hour to install and courtesy of the less invasive surgical technique, recovery time is typically rather quick.

Patients who suffer from chronic acid reflux should seek medical attention. This condition can lead to long-term complications. Over the long haul, the esophagus itself can suffer damage that leads to changes in the organ. These changes can serve as the precursor for esophageal cancer.

Acid reflux and GERD are serious conditions. To find out more about the relief the LINX system may provide, speak with a qualified healthcare provider. This relatively new system is growing great results for those who suffer regularly from heartburn and other symptoms commonly associated with GERD and reflux.
