How to Care for Your Glasses

Posted by daviddon on July 23rd, 2015

You’ve spent your hard-earned money on new prescription glasses frames, so you’ll want to keep them in good condition, right? After all, they’re a long-term purchase. But incorrect or inadequate care can lead to damage to your lenses, such as scratches, which can stop them working properly. By following just a few simple steps, it’s easy to keep your eye glasses frames in tip-top condition:

  • Store your glasses in a hard case when you’re not wearing them to avoid them getting scratched or squashed.

  • Clean your glasses regularly to avoid a build-up of dirt.

  • When cleaning, use a special lens cleaning spray or a dab of water, then wipe gently in a circular motion with a soft, micro-fibre cloth. Keep in mind that wiping lenses on clothes or other materials can cause scratching.

  • Avoid touching your lenses directly with your fingers, which can lead to scratching, dirt build-up, and smudging.

  • Don’t let others try on your glasses, which can cause the frames to stretch or, if they’re not handled correctly, breakages.

  • Try not to make a habit of wearing your glasses on top of your head, which can cause them to become out of shape. If you don’t need them, simply take them off.

  • Use two hands to take your glasses on and off. Using just one can mean accidentally pulling at the arm of the frames and stretching or breaking them. Alternatively, hold your glasses by the nose arch.

  • When setting down your glasses, even momentarily, never place them lens down, which risks scratching the lens.

  • If your glasses do somehow get damaged, take them to an optician for fixing. Trying to mend them yourself can often make things worse.
