The NHL's 2015-16 regular season will be a day longer now

When you're a kid growing up in a state that has a real winter, one of the great joys of the season is when it snows heavily enough to cancel school. It's so fun when it happens, but then you're reminded – depending on your school's policy – that even snow days need to be made up at the end of the year. The same is true when pro hockey games get snowed out.

Amid a scheduling nightmare, the NHL was forced to extend the regular season by a day to ensure the games previously scheduled for Jan. 22 and 23 could be made up with minimal headaches when it comes to travel and working in the appropriate rest days.

So now, Game No. 704 between the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals previously scheduled for Jan. 22 will now take place at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Game No. 716 featuring the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Islanders, previously scheduled for Jan. 23, will be the same day at 7 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

All four teams are scheduled to play April 9, which creates some back-to-back games that could end up being crucial to playoff races considering the teams involved. That Islanders-Flyers game could prove particularly big.

The Flyers won't have far to go as it will be a quick trip from Philadelphia to New York, where the Islanders will be coming off of what should have been their last home game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Flyers play the Penguins the night before at home.buy NHL 16 Coins on www.igxe.com/NHL16/cheap-NHL16-coins-NHL16.html

The Capitals will be traveling back from a game against the St. Louis Blues, while the Ducks will have to travel two time zones following an early-evening game against the Colorado Avalanche in Denver. Depending on how the currently-tight Pacific Division race shakes out by then, it could prove to be a pretty important game for Anaheim coming off of that trip.

The other Capitals game that was postponed by weather was a Jan. 24 meeting with the Pittsburgh Penguins on home ice. That now will be played on March 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Verizon Center also.

It's never ideal to have to reschedule games, but at least on this makeup day there's some hockey instead of algebra.
