Concerned about Absenteeism and Backlog

Posted by Deepak Sanghi on February 4th, 2016

With events like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Code Freeze, the late Novembers and Decembers are always busy times in the US. While most of them spend quality family time in a festive mood and embark on shopping, the workflow of any business getting affected is not unpredictable. Even during the other months, employees take vacations or leave during Spring Break or the Summer Break when schools have long holidays.  In that list, the US healthcare domain is no exception. Absenteeism among employees and backlogs in the production are unavoidable. With new changes introduced by Obamacare, handling the medical coding services as well as the administrative functions can be extremely challenging. Let us analyze this situation and arrive at a possible solution:

Festive Season: It is a known fact that the workflow of the US healthcare entities slowdown during the late Novembers and Decembers due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. It is during this holiday season that most of them search for the best deals to shop and get together with family and friends. Therefore, absenteeism among the employees of outsourced medical billing companies cannot be prevented. The ideal solution would be to outsource a part of medical coding services to offshore medical billing companies to reduce or offset the impact.

Rapid Changes in the Domain: It is only recently that the US healthcare domain had witnessed the biggest change of the decade – the ICD-10 Implementation. With an inclusion of more than 200,000 codes to the existing code set, the US healthcare entities are struggling to implement the change. On top, the ACA (Affordable Care Act) has introduced various other patient-centered healthcare reforms, including the PQRS (Physician Quality Reporting System) implementation. Establishing, adapting, and working according to these new reforms can be challenging as they require intense training. It may take a lot of time for the employees to get a hands-on experience on these changes. Meanwhile, the continuation of medical coding services cannot be stalled. In order to fill this gap, outsourcing to offshore medical billing companies would be the wise choice.

Impact on the US Healthcare Entities: When the workflow slows down, the reimbursement gets affected greatly. The Payers will stop sending payments to Providers if the claims are not submitted on time. Eventually, the Providers will not be able to pay their partners to whom they have outsourced medical billing. To avoid these chain reactions from taking place, US medical billing companies must outsource a part of their medical coding services to reputed offshore medical billing companies. This way the workflow does not get affected despite the absenteeism. India would be the best destination for offshore medical billing as it works on a different time zone that is highly convenient for the US entities to work with.
