Nursing home neglect comes in many different forms. Some of the types are more obvious than others, so it is important to know what to look for if you believe that nursing home neglect is occurring.  The different types of nursing home neglect are:

•   Basic needs neglect: Everyone has basic needs, which include food, water and shelter. If you notice that your loved one is being denied food or water or that their living condition is not clean and suitable for living in, then they are most likely being subjected to basic needs neglect. You may notice a weight loss in your loved one or they may be experiencing symptoms of dehydration. Basic needs neglect is incredibly serious and will need to be addressed immediately.

•   Emotional neglect/verbal abuse: Emotional neglect can be more challenging to recognize, but it includes any instances of verbal abuse or not attending to or caring about the emotional needs of a nursing home resident. Any type of insults, put downs or ignoring the needs of a resident are a form of neglect and abuse and is a problem that should not be allowed to continue.

•   Medical neglect: Medical neglect may be more difficult to recognize, but it occurs when your loved one is not receiving the medical care and attention that they need. Bed sores are a common type of medical neglect, as are any unattended cuts or bruising. If medication is not being given to your loved one in a timely manner or if medication is being withheld, this is a very serious problem that will need to be addressed.

•   Personal hygiene neglect: This type of neglect occurs if you notice that your loved one is showing signs of neglect in terms of their personal hygiene. You may notice that their teeth or dentures are not being properly cared for or their clothes may not have been washed for a long time. If your loved one is not being bathed, you might start to notice a smell. Any type of neglect in personal hygiene is very serious and needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

If you believe that your loved one is suffering from nursing home abuse, you should contact a Chicago nursing home negligence lawyer immediately.
