Pros & Cons of Powermatic PM2800B Drill Press

Posted by Tool Man on March 8th, 2016

I trust Powermatic to make high quality equipment for professional woodworkers. That’s why when I saw a Powermatic drill press in PM2800B, I thought it would be a good purchase as I was in need of one. Apparently, not all Powermatic machines are made to perfection and mine was one of them. I purchased this particular drill press at a 10% discount and it arrived within a week. However, I found it to be less than ideal for what I do. I am somewhat nauseated that I paid such a great amount of cash for an item that doesn't generally do the most straightforward assignments well that aren’t even that demanding.

Pros:

-          Nice brilliant shading, the machine looks fantastic in golden yellow color.

-          You can adjust the velocity without replacing belts.

-          LED lights are incredible and make the work much more convenient.

Cons:

-          Depth stops are questionable. This ought to be the most effortless thing to accomplish with a drill press. In any case, the depth stops on this have a frail spring that permits the depth stop to discharge and demolish your piece. There is likewise way more squirm room in them than there ought to be. I will supplant this unpleasant framework with a bolt, which is dismal. Seek YouTube and you will see a video from another proprietor with this issue.

-          Fence looks pleasant, yet is useless for repeatable openings. The stop squirms left and right by around 1/8 inch. I wound up replacing the framework with a Delta drill press table, which made it usable.

-          The sticker that covers the catches for the LED and laser was peeling off when it arrived. A call to Powermatic was a major bother. They needed to charge me for a substitution when it touched base in that condition. In the wake of being ricocheted forward and backward with specialists and standard client bolster, they at long last dispatched a substitution. They dispatched it overnight which was incredible. The professional was exceptionally hard to work with and not supportive. His input about the depth stop was to buy another depth stop and place it on top of the first. For 00, I didn't imagine I should be doing that.

-          The plastic lodging rubbed on the belt pulleys at low RPM. I needed to pry the lodging to the side to alter this.

-          The keyless throw is kind of irritating and a decent approach to incidentally discharge the bit and break it. Very costly, which sadly did not compare to higher quality.

Generally speaking, I expected a higher quality machine than I got. Perhaps SawStop and Festool has skewed my desires of items, yet when I am paying premium costs, I anticipate that everything will work and to get great client administration when it doesn't. I would not suggest purchasing this drill press. I will no doubt dodge Powermatic later on because of reliably poor client administration and not as much as perfect quality in the machines I have bought from them.
