6 Tips for Teaching Kids Positive Mental Health

Posted by Sheryl Wright on July 22nd, 2021

Mental health is essential in a child's early years. Mary Mackrain, an expert in infant and early childhood health, says that promoting mental health offers a safe base that helps to keep the family functioning properly. It is best to start implementing strategies for mental health as early as possible to help children develop their self-esteem and build their confidence and resilience.

To teach your kids more about positive mental health, here are six tips that parents may find helpful.

1. Hug Your Child Often

Hugging your children and telling them how much you love them is important for building self-esteem. This is a simple act of love that makes your child feel as though they belong in the family and are important to you. Studies have also shown that hugging your child often can lower their stress levels and even build their immune systems to protect them from illness.

2. Discuss Emotions Normally

When it comes to preserving the mental health of your kids, you should let them know that it's perfectly fine to talk about their feelings. This shows your child that their feelings are important that you are willing to listen to them when they are feeling sad, confused, or upset. You should also make it clear to your child that they can express feelings of happiness as well and that their accomplishments will be celebrated in the family. Specialists such as Dr. Ramani Durvasula assert that talking about feelings makes children more comfortable with their emotions and the emotions of others.

3. Live In the Moment

Spend uninterrupted time with your children to encourage their mental health. This teaches your children to avoid the constant distractions that we are bombarded within today's society. Take time to play a board game, check in with your child about how they're feeling, or spend time outdoors. Showing your child that they are a priority to you will help them form healthy friendships in the future and build their sense of confidence.

4. Recognize Your Child's Effort

It is important to encourage your child and recognize when they're trying their best to accomplish a goal. This promotes positive mental health and increases the likelihood that children will take on challenges that will lead to success in their adult lives. Providing encouragement will also send the message t your children that they are still worthy of love despite their imperfections.

5. Exemplify Good Behavior

By now, you've likely recognized that children will imitate what you do more than they listen to what you say. You are your child's first and best teacher, so leading by example when it comes to positive behaviors will have a huge impact on your little one. Your children need to see you taking care of yourself and doing things you enjoy so they'll feel comfortable doing the same as they grow.

6. Discuss Mental Health with Healthcare Providers

Mental health is crucial for overall wellbeing. Speak with your child's pediatrician about your little one's mental health during wellness visits. Ask the doctor which skills or behaviors your child should be exhibiting based on their age. Speak with the pediatrician about any concerns you have so you can incorporate new methods into your child's routine to promote mental health if necessary. When you have an idea of what to expect when it comes to your child's thought patterns and emotional state, you'll be able to spot behaviors that could be cause for concern if they are left unaddressed.

Showing your child how much you care and using the appropriate resources to develop and safe and healthy environment in your home can promote your child's mental health in their younger years and as they grow into adults.
