The Benefits of Fortified Rice

Posted by Business Consultant on September 30th, 2021

Rice is a staple food consumed by people across many cultures around the world and has been a staple food for people for thousands of years. It is an easily available and affordable source of nourishment, fuel and protein, which is why it is vital for nutrition security. There are many myths around rice that need to be dispelled. Some of these myths are that it causes stomach upsets or flatulence, that it causes belly fat, or that it causes cancers or other diseases.

The main myth surrounding rice fortification relates to the bioavailability of the nutrients. In common belief, the concept is that as long as the food is not contaminated with pathogens or tainted with toxins, the nutrients will be available for the body to absorb. The concept is based on the idea that organisms that attack or digested the food will also kill the nutrients in the food. Rice and other foods have enzymes that make it more bioavailable than vegetables and meats, but they do not enhance the bioavailability of iron or other nutrients.

Iron is one of the most important nutrients for overall health and that is why it is often deficient in developing countries. The absorption of iron from vegetables is poor and bioavailability is low, so iron supplementation may not be necessary. However, bioavailability of other nutrients including copper and zinc is enhanced when rice and other foods are consumed. The concept of bioavailability of iron is complicated and not well understood, but it is generally accepted that it refers to how well the nutrient can be absorbed from an ingredient. The concept of acceptability refers to how easy the nutrient is absorbed by the body.

Currently there are four main techniques used in rice fortification. They include spraying, tablet, enema and infusion. Spray treatment involves application of a special mixture of chemical compounds fortifying the rice or other foods with vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Tablets are taken regularly or orally in small doses to increase the bioavailability of vitamins and other nutrients. Injection is the most effective method used to fortify foods as it releases the nutrients slowly into the body over a long period of time.

Although improved techniques and more widespread use of enriched flour have made the tablet and oral products highly acceptable, they still face many challenges. First, consumers do not always take the time to read the nutrition facts on the back of the box or learn about enriching the flour by adding other ingredients. Second, consumers do not always understand that Fortified Rice is not the same as regular rice. It has been enriched with a variety of nutrients and compounds such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc., and is not made from all-natural whole foods. Fortified Rice has become a very attractive market, but its real benefits are not being fully realized by consumers.

Fortified Rice is available at health food stores and online. The Fortified Rice manufacturer provides information on the website about the various nutrients included in each package. The manufacturer\'s recommended daily allowance of vitamins, nutrients, amino acids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, fiber, minerals and trace elements are listed for each supplement. A complete list of recommended brands is also provided. However, consumers need to take the initiative to learn about and understand the complete package of nutrients contained in Fortified Rice in order to maximize its benefit.
