Difference Between OPD and IPD

Posted by IIFL Insurance on May 11th, 2022

OPD is an abbreviation for Outpatient Department, whereas IPD is an abbreviation for Inpatient Department. Instead of being admitted to the OPD, a patient is admitted to the IPD for at least 24 hours. In terms of pricing, they are both separate. The cost of OPD is lower than the cost of IPD. Furthermore, an OPD patient may need to return for full therapy, but an IPD patient is discharged after treatment is done.

Under the supervision of a doctor, a patient receives competent medical treatment in both the OPD and the IPD. The medical condition determines whether patients are treated in the OPD or IPD.

To begin comparing OPD and IPD, a patient must be admitted to a hospital for IPD for longer than 24 hours. In contrast, OPD therapy does not need the patient being hospitalised for more than 24 hours. A patient who arrives at a hospital for the first time will almost probably go to the emergency department. However, based on the doctor\'s first diagnosis, they would need to stay longer for IPD.

Another difference between OPD and IPD is that OPD handles consultations, minor operations, dental and ophthalmology treatments, and so on, whereas IPD handles more significant health concerns. Such as extensive or difficult surgery, a serious sickness requiring continual monitoring, delivery, rehabilitation services, and so forth.

OPD is an abbreviation for Outpatient Department, whereas IPD is an abbreviation for Inpatient Department. A patient is not admitted to the OPD, but is admitted to the IPD for at least 24 hours. They also differ in terms of price. OPD is less expensive than IPD. Furthermore, a patient may be required to return to an OPD for complete therapy, whereas a patient is released from an IPD after receiving complete treatment.
