Tips for Including Career Breaks on Your Resume

Posted by Cheri Crystal on September 23rd, 2022

Many people interrupt their careers for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common are: caring for children or older relatives, travel, moving after marriage, health issues/complications, etc. Mentioning a career break depends on the length of the break and how long ago it was. It's not just about mentioning it, it's about putting your career breakthrough in perspective and presenting it positively.

Here are some tried-and-true methods candidates take when mentioning their career gap:

  1. If you worked in the previous position for several years, please mention the year (2012-2016) instead of the month (May 2012-June 2016)
  2. Start your professional cv writing Uk with a summary and career highlights section so you can emphasize your skills and achievements more than before.
  3. Build on other experiences during your career break - volunteering, consulting, and freelancing experience. These experiences are often seen as work experiences themselves.

Explaining gaps in an interview can be more difficult. Solve the problem directly when prompted. If you have interrupted your career to take care of children/family members etc, be sure to mention that the reason you interrupted your career no longer applies.
