Here Comes the Pain-Origin of Pain and Relief

Pain is a genetic inclination. Though, besides being hard coded in our genes, we crave a deeper explanation for it. The most potent of pains is not physical but emotional. It is bizarre to imagine how a song can hurt and make you reminisce of that someone who once endured pain more than what a stab in the back can inflict… which is quite a befitting rival to the pain. Everyone has their thresholds of pain, their encounters…

Our author, Ally Snow, has had her fair share of experiences. Let’s ponder upon how we can cope with ours.

Nociceptors

A great man once said, “Sit with the pain until it passes, and you will be calmer for the next.” When encountering pain, our fight or flight response kicks in, which is your brain’s way of striving for survival. We run away from our problems rather than confronting them head-on and only increasing our suffering rather than easing it out.

Humans tend to act hostile towards things we don’t understand. Essentially, we overstate our problems and pain more than it truly is.

We need to understand its nature and fundamentals to sit with pain and accept its presence. Ally Snow talks about the structure of pain in her book thoroughly.

As our body develops from infancy, it develops pain detectors, also known as Nociceptors. These detectors run from our spinal cord and branch throughout our body, preparing us for life’s hardships in adolescence subconsciously. It makes you wonder how we perceive our mind happens to be only a fraction of what it can truly achieve. These nociceptors are responsible for reminding you that your antics are harmful to your well-being overall.

An alarm that sets off when your body is in survival mode.

Swimming Endorphins

Now that we understand the fundamentals behind every needle prick, our pathway to the other side becomes adamantly clear, which is a relief.

Endorphins are the yin to the yang of nociceptors. These chemicals are released whenever our mind experiences joy, comfort, or happiness. Endorphins are neurotransmitters from the brain binding to the same receptors sensitive to drugs such as morphine. The receptors are responsible for making you feel, well… good.

It is just a fancy term for relief if you will. You can acquire your dose of endorphins by watching your comfort movie for the 17th time, eating your favorite pizza flavor driving down a road at 100 km/h, or moaning your heart out in bed with the person you love…

But the funny thing about relief is what always preceded pain is discomfort and stress.

Levels of this pain

Imagine happiness at face value, without particular inception, a resolution without a struggle, or a climax without the movie. The truth is, the relief preceded by pain will always be more satisfying than one that manifests itself without any particular plight. There is a reason why pleasure is too sober; it is a pain mixed with joy that reflects itself in a cocktail of orgasmic bliss that makes the pursuit worthwhile.
