The plan

In a country where so many are used to reassuring for other countries at main tournaments, this group of players have enthralled a nation by clinching a spot at the World Cup for the second time still and the first since 1986.

Following a gruelling 20-game Football World Cup qualification journey, where they astonished everyone to brilliantly top the final round of Conceal qualifying, Canada were drawn in a rough group for Qatar, alongside Morocco and two European giant who made the last four in 2018, Belgium and Croatia.

Right away, they set about finding an adversary who played a alike possession-based style with star midfielders and in a September friendly next to Uruguay gained significant insight into what the task would be similar to in Qatar, playing well in a game they lost 2-0.

What the players understand now is that we are right there. Some of the work in the attack just was not clinical sufficient, but we are close,” the head coach, John Herdsman, reflected afterwards.

What also was clear was Canada’s promise to keeping the ball and being courageous in possession, despite a step up in quality in their opponent. During qualifying, Canada were a major danger in attacking transitions and are blessed with extraordinary pace that will be on the radar of all their opponents. Urgent as high as they did in qualifying, against top opponents, may be a bridge too far, but Herdman seems adamant that his team will not suddenly change course by sitting too deep, as Canada chase their first goal at a men’s World Cup.

One shadow execution over the arrangements has been the tense and rather public talks with Canada Soccer around World Cup bonuses and image rights, which have not been solved at the time of writing.

The coach: John Herdman

John Herdman became a family name in Canada when he guided the women’s national team to back-to-back bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. As taking over the men’s team in 2018 he has galvanized another group, bringing purpose and agreement to the new underachievers. The English manager turned the attitude of the group from “me into we” and believed before any of the players that qualification for 2022 was likely. Tactically, he often changes formations throughout the game, usually moving between a back three systems with wing-backs to a level back four.

Star player: Alphonso Davies

After missing 7 of the final 14 Football World Cup qualifiers, Canada have to learn to win without Alphonso Davies, but there is small question who the star is when he is available. Herdsman experiment with the Bayern Munich man in his usual left-back position in the near the beginning stages of his tenure, but Davies has made it clear that he wants to be an attacking dissimilarity-maker for this team and his extraordinary individual goal against Panama in qualifying shows no one also can do what he can.

Canada is about to play in the World Cup. Here's everything you need to become a soccer expert

With a week to go waiting the FIFA Football World Cup begins, Canada's national men's team is put the final touches on arrangements for a tournament 36 years in the making.

The team have only qualified once previously — in 1986 — which means a whole new age group of supporters are gearing up to applaud for the national squad as it enters the world's top soccer tournament.

To help Canadians appreciate the path to a title win, and who might finally prevail, CBC News has prepared a guide for bandwagon fans, with everything you need to be acquainted with about the beautiful game — and Canada's chances.

Soccer newbie, here! What basics should I know?

The Football World Cup is detained every four years. Canada is one of 32 teams after qualifying in its continental alliance tournament.

Qatar is hosting this year's tournament (it is contentious — more on that later) and will play the opening match next to Ecuador on Nov. 20.

How does the competition work?

First, the group phase: The teams are alienated into eight groups of four, and will play each team in their own group once. There will be four matches every day over a 12-day period.

In this phase, a win is worth three points, a draw value one and a loss earns zero points. The top two teams from every group — that is, the teams with the most "points" — will go forward to the knockout round.

The knockout round: The residual 16 teams will play next to different groups (for instance, the top team in group A will play the 2nd-top team in group B).  Every losing team is eliminated from the tournament awaiting the semifinals, when there are four teams left. Two will go forward to the final, while the remaining two will play for third place

Who is Canada playing against?

Canada is in group F, so will play Belgium (November. 23), Croatia (November 27) and Morocco (December. 1) in the group phase. For the soccer inexperienced, that's three tough matchups: Belgium is at present second in FIFA's men's rankings, Croatia lost the 2018 World Cup final to France, and Morocco was unbeatable in its World Cup qualifying run.

So, we're not going to win the World Cup?

Experts say probably not — but don't let that get you down.

Keep in mind: this is Canada's second-ever World Cup. without scoring. The benchmark of success, in some ways, is a goal … If they get a win that would be huge, said soccer writer Chris Jones, who will be in Qatar covering the World Cup for CBC Sports.

If Canada gets out of the group [stage], that's incredible, like, that's our description of winning the World Cup.

Tell me more about the Canadian team. Who should I name-drop?

Canada's full Rota was announced on Sunday — headlined by Alphonso Davies, one of the world's best young soccer players.

Fans were left concerned after the 22-year-old suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Bayern Munich over the weekend, other than the German club told CBC News that Davies's participation in the Football World Cup "is not at risk."

Too keep an eye out for defensive midfielder Stephen Eustaquio and forward Jonathan David who are together heading to Qatar from be obvious season in Europe. Stipulation you had to place a bet on which Canadian man was going to score the first goal in Football World Cup history, I think Jonathan David is a really good bet, Jones said.
