A door lock according to its purpose can be:
1. Main - a lock equipped with a special latch lock, which is opened by turning the handle. It is installed at the bottom of the door so that the handle is at the level of the person's belt.
2. Additional - designed only for locking the front door, it complements the protective properties.

Types of lock according to the method of fastening:

Hinged - most often installed on the door to the barn, garage, in those rooms where there are no valuables. Such a lock does not provide the necessary protection; it can be easily cut with a hacksaw or opened with a master key.

Overhead lock - used for an external entrance door made of metal and wood. For installation, it is not necessary to cut a recess in the door leaf. It opens from the outside - with a key, and inside - with the help of an auxiliary shutter with a two-turn device.

Mortise - mounted in the door leaf and has a hidden mechanism, which is masked with a special lining. Such a lock is used for entrance and interior doors.

Types of locks by type of locking mechanism

Lever locks and keys are quite massive. The system is based on special flat plates with patterned cutouts - “levers”, which close the door when turned with a key. The greater their number in the product, the higher the degree of safety. The large size of the key hole is a weak point, which is eliminated with the help of armored plates.

Reliable lever locks have an encoding device, with which you can easily change the key and not worry about your own protection in case it is lost. The lock mechanism is quite durable, however, in case of damage, it must be completely replaced. The system is reliable from knocking out and cutting out, therefore it is more often used in the financial sector.

The most modern and common type is the lock with a cylindrical device. In contrast to the lever, it has a replaceable cylinder with a ledge (larva), which, by turning the key, activates the locking mechanism. Therefore, in case of failure, it is not necessary to completely change the lock. Reliability also depends on the type of "larvae", which are disk - the secret part consists of disks and pins - spring-loaded pins perform the secret function.

The advantage of these mechanisms is the difficulty of drilling or selecting a key (master key).
The cylinder is a weak point of such a lock, it can be easily broken out using an ordinary locksmith set.
Therefore, it is recommended to install a lock complete with a protective bar or special balls inside the case on the door of a residential premises or behind which there are valuable things.
