Homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is a type of internal combustion engine in which a homogeneous mixture of fuel and air is injected into the combustion chamber with a high air-fuel (a/f) ratio, and the injected mixture is compressed until it auto-ignites, unlike spark ignition (SI) engines. HCCI features a very lean combustion technique that allows simultaneous reductions in NOx and soot emissions from internal combustion engines.
