How To Spruce Up Your Homes Exterior 5 Areas To Consider

Posted by Anna Johnson on February 27th, 2023

There are a lot of articles out there that discuss how to improve the interior aesthetic of your home. But what about the outside?

After all, homes are judged on how they look from the outside too, and if you have just moved into your new home or you are looking to sell your property, you may be surprised at how much of an impact the exterior will have.

So, what are some areas to focus on when aiming to improve the exterior of your home?

The Front Door

It's the first thing people will see when they are trying to enter your home, and it can say a lot about the interior!

A front door that is worn, damaged, rotting, or has chipped paint is not going to make a good impression on anyone and can cause the value of your home to drop. Also, if your front door is not maintained, it can also become a security hazard.

So, if your front door is a bit of an eyesore, it is well worth considering investing in a front door replacement or, at the very least, a repaint!

The Front Garden or Yard

A front yard is often the first thing visitors see when they approach your home, so it's essential to make it look attractive.

There are many ways that you can do this without needing to pave over it.

You can aim to create a focal point in your front yard, such as a sculpture or even a tree. Then, why not add some colorful plants or shrubs? If you live in a home where there is minimal space to add such things, you can still make the walkway attractive. Aim to put a gate in or place some potted plants near the front door.

Lighting

OK, so when it comes to exterior lighting around a home, it has a few purposes.

The first is to provide security, and having a light that is motion activated is going to be a good idea for most homes to deter burglaries. But outdoor lighting can help highlight and accentuate the architectural features of a home. This can include highlighting columns, arches, or the texture of a stone or brick facade.

It can also be used to illuminate and enhance the landscaping of a home. This can include highlighting trees, shrubs, flowers, and other features such as fountains or statues. So, put some lights up!

Fencing

Fencing is another exterior feature that can make your home look beautiful and can also add a layer of security.

Try to ensure that any fencing that you put up matches the aesthetic of your street to avoid irritation from your neighbors. Also, be sure to look into the maintenance of the fencing; wooden fences will need maintaining than metal ones, and also consider the height of any fences you put around your front yard.

Cleanliness

A yard that is clean is obviously going to be more appealing than a yard that is covered in litter and unkempt.

So, try to clean any blown-in litter from your front yard at least once a week. If you have any furniture that you no longer need, do not simply place it in your front yard for days at a time, as this can give the illusion of clutter and poor housekeeping; always aim to put it outside on the day it is due to be collected.
