JNI takes pride in the fact that 40 years back, it showed the wisdom to take the therapeutic aspect of this wonderful, classical treatise in to good use, and proved its efficacy beyond doubt, which now the world is talking about.

It is important that before getting into practice, one knows how to practice it correctly

We shall from time to time show how to ideally practice Asanas. Today, we shall discuss Ushtrasans, which is one of the classical asana in the text.

USHTRASANA

This asana involves bending backward, till the body assumes the shape of a camel.

Technique : Sit in Vajrasana. Stand on the knees and place the palms on the waist.

Keep the thighs, knees and feet slightly apart. While inhaling raise the arms over the head. While exhaling lean backward, stretch the arms from shoulder towards the heels and hold the right heel with the right hand and left heel with the left hand. In the final position, keep the thighs Perpendicular to the floor, push the abdomen forward and lift the sternum. Maintain the position with normal breath as long as you are comfortable. To release the pose, while inhaling raise the torso and the arms and while exhaling bring the hands down and place them on the waist.

Benefits: This stretches the chest and the abdomen and improves blood circulation to all the internal organs of the body and also improves the function of thyroid gland. The backward bend helps tone the muscles of the back and removes stiffness and pain from back and shoulders. It helps increase the lungs capacity and thus, treat asthma and bronchitis. It also strengthens the reproductive organs and regulates the menstrual flow.
