Mold Removal - How to Get Rid of Mold in Your Home

Posted by RonaldMHarrise on May 23rd, 2023

Mold spores are hazardous to your health and they can also aggravate pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma. They can also damage plaster and wall coverings. It’s best to get the spores out of your house as soon as possible before they spread further. Mold removal involves a combination of steps, from killing the mold spores to cleaning the affected areas and repairing any damage. It’s important to wear rubber gloves while removing the mold as it can cause skin irritation. It’s also a good idea to open windows and keep a fan running in the room while you work, to control the fumes.

To remove mildew and mold stains from walls, start by applying a solution of water and bleach. This will kill the Summit Cleaning and remove the discoloration on the surface. Allow the solution to soak into the spots for several minutes, before scrubbing the area with a scrub brush. If the stain is particularly stubborn, use a commercial cleaner containing bleach as an active ingredient (available at your local True Value hardware store).

If you find that the mold spores keep returning to the same spot, try using borax to prevent future growth. Combine one cup of borax with a gallon of water, and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Apply the spray to the problem areas, and scrub as needed. Be sure to open a window and keep the sprayer running; the borax can create unpleasant fumes.

For more extensive mold damage to your home’s walls, you may need to remove and replace the affected drywall and any other porous materials. Depending on the severity of the mold infestation, this can involve the entire home, and professional remediation services should be used to ensure that all the spores are killed. Before starting the mold removal process, it’s a good idea to protect surrounding surfaces by covering them with plastic sheets or drop cloths. This will protect against any chemical spills, which might damage the flooring or furnishings. It’s also a good idea for homeowners to wear rubber gloves and face masks when working with bleach or other mold-killing chemicals.
