Free Space Optics (FSO) communication, also known as optical wireless communication, is a technology that enables high-speed data transmission using beams of light in free space. Unlike traditional wired or wireless communication methods that rely on cables or radio waves, FSO utilizes laser or LED beams to transmit data through the atmosphere. FSO offers several advantages, including high data rates, low latency, and secure transmission. It is commonly used in scenarios where laying physical cables is impractical or costly, such as urban areas, campuses, or temporary setups.

FSO works by establishing a line-of-sight connection between two communicating endpoints. Transmitters and receivers equipped with optical devices are installed at each endpoint, and data is transmitted as light pulses through the air. The light beam is modulated to carry the data signal, and the receiver decodes the light pulses back into the original data. FSO systems typically operate in the infrared spectrum, which allows for longer transmission distances and lower susceptibility to interference. However, they can also operate in the visible light spectrum, offering the advantage of being less affected by atmospheric conditions.

One of the key benefits of FSO communication is its high data transmission capacity. FSO systems can achieve gigabit speeds, allowing for the rapid transfer of large files, video streaming, and other bandwidth-intensive applications. Moreover, FSO offers low latency, making it suitable for applications that require real-time communication, such as video conferencing or online gaming. Additionally, FSO provides a secure method of data transmission since the light beam is confined within a narrow path and is difficult to intercept without physical access. However, FSO does have limitations, such as its susceptibility to weather conditions like fog or heavy rain, which can attenuate or scatter the light beam, causing temporary disruptions in communication.
