Tips and Tricks for Cleaning an Organic Mattress

An organic mattress is an important investment that can get you started with a cleaner and healthier lifestyle. High-quality organic mattresses are made of natural Dunlop or latex, which repels dust mites and promotes good air circulation to make body perspiration dissipate quickly. Many organic mattresses are made with layers of organic cotton and organic wool, too, and both are known to be hypoallergenic. Although these mattresses bear those characteristics, they still need to be routinely cleaned and maintained. Here are some tips and tricks for cleaning your organic mattress:

  • Use a vacuum cleaner

Your organic mattress may repel dust mites, but your dead skin cells, dust, and other debris will remain on it and may accumulate over time. Hence, consider vacuuming your mattress once per season, each time you rotate it. Use the upholstery attachment and make sure it is clean, so it does not leave any other nasty deposits on your mattress.

  • Spot clean stains immediately

On an average, we spend around 1/3 of our life in bed, and as we sleep, we sweat around half a pint of perspiration. Although an organic mattress has moisture-wicking properties, some stains can still leave a permanent mark. Urine, sweat, blood and other bodily fluids are protein stains, and these are usually the ones that end up on the mattress. Be sure to remove them as soon as they occur or as soon as you notice them.

Here's how to do it: Blot liquid stains with a wet and cool cloth, and blot the excess moisture with a dry cloth. Use a pressing motion instead of a circular motion, so you do not rub the stain in. If the stain is fresh, you can remove it with a mixture of water, baking soda, and salt to create a paste, then rub it on the affected area. Leave it for 30 minutes before brushing it off, then use cool water with a damp cloth to get rid of the excess paste and allow it to air dry.

  • Use eco-friendly and healthy cleaners

Organic mattresses are free of toxic chemicals, and you need to make sure to keep them that way. An alternative to the baking soda paste is a mixture of white vinegar and water, with a little lemon juice if you want to add a scent.

  • Air the mattress casing outside

Some organic mattresses have a removable cover, which can be unzipped. Schedule your cleaning on a sunny day and air the organic mattress cover casing outside to let fresh air and sunshine to naturally freshen it.
