The History of Boxing News

The weekly British magazine Boxing News, founded in 1909, is the longest-running publication dedicated to the sport of boxing. Originally titled simply Boxing, original editor John Murray convinced the owner of Health & Strength to give him space for what was then a revolutionary idea: a paper that focused solely on fighting. Murray’s first editorial stated “Boxing will stand for good clean sport. Its success or failure will be in the hands of those who believe in it.”

In 1931, Boxing was bought by a syndicate of London sportsmen and Sydney Rushton, long-time editor of a rival fight paper, became the editor. He redesigned the magazine, cut popular features and tried to run it as a newspaper, but the magazine lost circulation.

After losing its majority share in the mid-1990s, a city printer and huge boxing fan Billy Masters bought the paper. He appointed Claude Abrams as assistant editor and revived BN. It has since become Britain’s leading trade magazine, its front cover often sporting a striking full-colour image of a prominent fighter. In-depth features regularly focus on the sport’s biggest names, such as Nicola Adams and USA’s first female Olympic gold medallist Claressa Shields.
Canelo Alvarez vs. Badou Jack

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is widely regarded as one of the sport's biggest stars and it would be no surprise to see him make the transition to the heavyweight division in the near future. However, before he does so, he may have to make a few fights in the cruiserweight division first.

Currently, the WBC cruiserweight champion is Badou Jack. The Ripper won the title in his last fight by beating Ilunga Makabu in February 2023. Initially, it seemed like the pair could meet in September, but plans have since fallen apart. Jack took to social media to explain the issue and it comes down to two key demands from Canelo's camp.

Canelo wants the rematch to take place on the same terms as the first fight. He also wants to keep the fight on his own date, which is Mexican Independence Day weekend. Those are both valid points, but they could be a deal-breaker for some fans.

Another problem is the weight limit for the fight. Originally, it was planned for 200 pounds, which is what Canelo usually fights at. But, according to Jack's promoter, Amer Abdallah, they are checking with governing bodies to see what the rules actually say about that.

If they do decide to go ahead with the fight, it could be a major event in Saudi Arabia. Abdallah has worked with Eddie Hearn in the past and he is also aligned with the kingdom. Bringing in Canelo, who is one of the sport's biggest names, would be a big boost for the region's boxing scene.

As for who Badou Jack will fight next, he has been linked with a rematch against Dmitry Bivol. That's a good fight for both men, but it might not happen as Bivol doesn't seem interested in the rematch. If he really wanted to avenge his loss, he would have been fighting GGG and John Ryder first.
John Ryder vs. Berlanga

Edgar Berlanga is one of the most promising contenders in the super middleweight division. The Brooklyn-based fighter started his career with a streak of 16 first-round knockout wins, which earned him the nickname “the Puerto Rican Monster.” His quick success caught the attention of Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. Hearn plans to throw Berlanga in against “world level” opponents to see where he stands in the rankings.

Berlanga is still undefeated in the professional ranks, but he has struggled to put together a consistent run of victories. In his last fight, Berlanga scored a 10-round unanimous decision win over Roamer Alexis Angulo in June 2022. In his previous fights, he went the distance with Demond Nicholson, Marceo Esteban Coceres, and Steve Rolls. Despite struggling to find his groove in his most recent contests, Berlanga has not given up on his dream of fighting Canelo Alvarez in the future.

The boxing world has seen its fair share of great matchups, and a potential fight between Berlanga and Canelo could be a classic. Both fighters are undefeated, and both have the power to dominate their respective divisions. The fight would also bring fans back to the sport and spark a rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico.

As of late, Canelo has been linked to a rematch with Dmitry Bivol and David Benavidez. Both fighters have a ton of hype behind them, but it is not clear who Hearn will choose as his next opponent.

Berlanga recently signed a long-term deal with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing promotion. He is one of the top contenders in the super middleweight division, and a victory over Ryder will set him up for a big fight in 2024.

John Ryder has been a solid competitor at the super middleweight division, and he is eager to take on another top challenger in Edgar Berlanga. The two fighters have a lot in common, and their styles will make for an exciting matchup. The bout will be broadcast live on DAZN in the United States. The winner will earn a shot at Canelo’s title in the near future.
Shaun Brown

Despite his family’s insistence that he become a heart surgeon, Shaun Brown fell in love with acting while performing in musical theater productions. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting in television and film. He soon landed a national Office Depot commercial and a role in an independent film that showcased his hip-hop dancing and singing abilities. He was subsequently signed to the management company Principato-Young Entertainment.

He has guest starred in numerous television shows and is currently starring in the CBS series The Great Indoors. In the show, he plays Mason, a writer at an adventure magazine who attempts to bridge the gap between millennials and Baby Boomers.

Shaun is also an accomplished Australian baritone, having performed across Australasia and the United States. He is a former Opera Queensland Young Artist and has appeared with the company in several productions including La Boheme, Ruddigore, Don Giovanni, and The Merry Widow. He is also a frequent adjudicator at vocal and choral competitions and eisteddfods. In addition, he is also a well-known soloist appearing regularly in Brisbane’s major concert venues.
