PLATO Artificial Intelligence begins to realize the world: Like a baby, it learns the rules of physics and gains unique

Our computers may not yet be able to match the level of genius of artists or apply the tactics of martial arts soldiers, but artificial intelligence systems are getting smarter and more trainable every day. Recent studies have shown that even newborn babies have a basic understanding of some aspects of the world around them. Wouldn't you like to know how artificial intelligence can replicate this process?

Scientists have presented us with a new artificial intelligence system called PLATO ("Learning Physics by Automatically Encoding and Tracking Objects"). It's a teachable program that seeks to understand the rules of the real world, similar to the way babies do when experiencing and learning about a new world. Here's how it works:

The researchers applied videos of five key concepts that infants grasp early in their lives:

  • Permanence - objects cannot disappear suddenly.
  • Solidity - solid objects cannot penetrate each other.
  • Continuity - objects move sequentially in space and time.
  • Immutability - objects do not change shape arbitrarily.
  • Directed inertia - objects move according to the laws of inertia. After such training, PLATO's artificial intelligence was tested to understand these concepts, and the results were astonishing. When the system was shown clips with violations of the laws of physics, it instantly identified such cases as solid objects passing through each other, indicating that the program is beginning to realize the rules of the world around it and has basic knowledge.

However, the scientists also note that the system is still a work in progress. Among other things, it does not yet have the ability to "wonder" when it is shown a video without any objects. Nevertheless, this success gives us new opportunities to develop artificial intelligence to become more and more autonomous and intelligent in various fields.
