Why Quartz is better than Granite for Countertops

Posted by SummitCabinets on July 26th, 2016

So you’ve decided to remodel your kitchen and are stuck in limbo deciding whether you want to go with quartz or granite countertops. Granite countertops tend to be all the rage with new homebuyers, but there are alternative options that will make your kitchen stand out from others when doing your kitchen remodeling in Corona, CA.

One such alternative is quartz. Rather than using slabs of mined quartz, modern quartz countertops are actually made of an engineered material that is a blend of ground natural quartz and some polymer resins (roughly 95 percent quartz and 5 percent resins).

Why Is Quartz Better than Granite?

•    Money – quartz is cheaper than granite, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality for the almighty dollar. If you have a lot of counter space in your kitchen it is more economical to go with quartz.

•    Strength – Quartz is actually stronger than granite. It consists of at least 90% pure quartz with a bit of coloration and resin binding for durability.

•    Stain-resistant – Both marble and granite, common choices for countertops, are porous and allow liquids to seep into the material when spills occur. This causes staining and can ruin its appeal. Quartz is non-porous and doesn’t need to be sealed which makes it stain resistant.

•    Maintenance – Quartz countertops require virtually no financial maintenance. Granite countertops need to be sealed on a regular basis to prevent both bacteria growth and staining. Quartz will still look as nice as the day you bought it months later without an additional financial investment.

•    Color – Granite is frequently dyed to improve its color and appeal. This can cause slight discoloration in the slab that is recognizable to the naked eye. You can get quartz slabs in many different colors, but the entire slab is dyed in the same manner. Manufacturers are extremely precise in design and you can specify the pattern, texture and color that you want. This ensures that you will have uniform color consistency on all countertops.

•    Cleaning – Quartz only requires basic soap and water to keep clean. You don’t need to use special chemicals or soaps that are designed to prevent bacteria from growing. Simply wipe down the counters when you’re done.

•    Scratch-resistant – Due to the way quartz countertops are designed and manufactured, they are resistant to scratches from typical kitchen wear.
