The North London Derby's Most Memorable Moments

Posted by atmatem3 on September 23rd, 2023

Tottenham supporters had long dreaded North London derbies. Until October 2008 came along, however. That year was when everything changed for Tottenham supporters.

Thierry Henry was at his peak of his career when he scored one of the most memorable goals ever in this matchup.

Back then, Arsenal needed to win this match in order to qualify for Champions League qualification and they came close.

1. David Bentley’s volley

This North London derby featured incredible close control from Thierry Henry, two powerful shots by Jermaine Jenas and one from Robert Pires; Jermaine Jenas hit one volley while Pires produced another to score one himself! Additionally, many Tottenham supporters disliked one player who scored.

David Bentley enjoyed an admirable career playing for Blackburn and Spurs - scoring two hat-tricks along the way and representing England - yet never felt like his potential was fully realized. Some likened his performances to those of Bergkamp or Gascoigne while others saw an unassuming player who did what needed doing but rarely stood out from his peers.

And yet he will forever be remembered for that incredible 40-yard volley in the 2010 derby, as well as dousing Redknapp with water after the final whistle at Ewood Park.

2. Jermaine Defoe’s volley

Only 38 seconds had passed when Defoe stunned the White Hart Lane crowd with his moment of class. Capitalising on an error by United defender Nemanja Vidic, Defoe took advantage of long ball into box before latching onto it to strike superbly over goalkeeper David de Gea.

Dick Advocaat won his debut game as Black Cats manager with this stunning strike from Jermain Defoe that eased Premier League relegation fears at the Stadium of Light and gave them a vital win against Swansea City. Later Defoe described it as the greatest goal he ever scored and admitted feeling emotional during its performance; also became his 200th league goal and entered him into the elite club of players with more than one hat-trick.

3. Robert Pires’ volley

North London derbie matches live up to their reputation: this was nonstop football from start to finish. David Bentley's long-range volley caught Manuel Almunia unawares, while Heurelho Gomes' flap handed Darren Bent one of the easiest finishes of his career.

Robert Pires stole the show as the true hero of the evening, taking advantage of lax defending to isolate Richard Dunne one-on-one before calmly smashing home his shot past the goalkeeper for what will surely go down as one of his most memorable goals in Tottenham colors and help Spurs finally beat neighbouring Manchester United - something they had not managed since 1999 - on what will go down as an unforgettable night for both clubs involved.

4. Jermaine Jenas’ volley

Jermaine Jenas has established himself as one of the Premier League's foremost pundits. He co-hosts BBC Radio 5 Live's Friday Football Social, as well as appearing weekly on BT Sport shows like 'The Score' and 'Match of the Day'.

He works for several international broadcasters such as Astro Supersport, Pyramids TV and Football Focus as a presenter, podcast host (The Graeme Souness Show) as well as being father to two young children with his wife in Hertfordshire where they enjoy cooking together. Prior to leaving Newcastle he served as vice-captain before going onto QPR and later Tottenham, playing 152 Premier League matches scoring 12 goals before helping Toon win Carling Cup 2004-05 as vice-captain of each side!

5. Aaron Lennon’s goal

At a sport where rivalries are almost inescapable, the North London derby stands out as one of the fiercest contests each year. Yet unlike some others that can produce fiercer matches due to geography differences alone, its tension stems from something else entirely: politics.

History plays a key role here; tension between both parties can be traced back to one event that occurred nearly 100 years ago.
