What is the ASTM standard for stainless steel pipe?

The ASTM standard for stainless steel pipe is ASTM A312. This standard covers seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service. It covers a range of sizes and diameters and is intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service applications. This standard is widely used in industrial settings where stainless steel piping is required.

ASTM A312 is a standard specification that specifies the manufacturing requirements and mechanical properties for stainless steel seamless pipe and welded pipe. This standard applies to diameters ranging from 1/8 inch (6.4mm) to 30 inches

(760mm) pipes with thickness ranging from standard (SCH5S) to table XXS (SCHXXS).

The characteristics of the ASTMA312 standard will be introduced in detail below.

(1) Pipe material selection

The ASTMA312 standard applies to stainless steel materials, including Austenitic stainless steel, Ferritic/Austenitic stainless steel (duplex stainless steel) and martensitic stainless steel. Depending on the specific requirements, pipe materials can be manufactured using different processes such as hot rolling, cold rolling, cold drawing, and welding.

(2) Pipe manufacturing method

The ASTMA312 standard requires seamless pipes to be manufactured by cold processing or hot processing, while welded pipes require automatic welding, manual welding or combined welding and other manufacturing methods.

(3) Pipe surface treatment

The ASTM A312 standard stipulates that the outer and inner walls of seamless and welded pipes should be mechanically polished to achieve certain surface finish requirements. In addition, the standard also stipulates the initial degreasing treatment, pickling treatment and post-processing cleaning treatment of pipelines.

(4)Pipeline mechanical properties

The ASTMA312 standard includes mechanical property requirements for seamless and welded pipes, including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and other performance indicators. These performance requirements can ensure that the pipeline has sufficient strength and reliability in actual use.

Scope of application of ASTMA312 standard

(1)Chemical industry

ASTM A312 standard pipelines are suitable for pipeline systems in the chemical industry, including pipelines for manufacturing, storing, and transporting chemical substances. Because stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and can prevent corrosion and contamination of pipelines by chemical substances, it is widely used in the chemical industry.

(2)Oil and natural gas industry

ASTM A312 standard pipelines are suitable for oil and natural gas drilling, extraction and transportation fields. The piping systems in these industries need to be able to withstand high pressure and high temperature requirements, while also being corrosion and wear-resistant. Stainless steel pipes meet these requirements.

(3)Food and pharmaceutical industry

ASTM A312 standard piping is also suitable for piping systems in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Because stainless steel is non-toxic, odorless, non-polluting, and easy to clean and disinfect, it is widely used in the production process of food and medicine.

In summary, the ASTM A312 standard is a standard specification applicable to stainless steel pipe manufacturing. By using pipes that meet this standard, you can ensure that the quality of the pipes meets the requirements, has good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, and is suitable for pipeline systems in many fields.
