Plan, Do, Check and Act - PDCA Cycle in ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is a global and sector-independent standard for the implementation and continuous improvement of EMS in businesses throughout the world. As a worldwide standard, it provides an effective framework for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. An environmental management system (EMS) enables an organization to consistently improve its environmental performance. It governs the essential processes, duties, and paperwork while integrating the aforementioned elements into a structured and methodical overall concept.

How is ISO 14001 Structured?

ISO 14001 was introduced in 1996. Since then, the standard has undergone continuous changes. In 2012, the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) established a unified structure for all management system standards, including ISO 14001. This High-Level Structure (HLS) consists of ten clauses. Clauses 1-3 provide introductory information regarding the standard, including:

  •          Normative references
  •          Terms and Definitions

Clauses 4-10 use the PDCA cycle (plan-do-check-act cycle) to define the needs of the management system in question.

PLAN

Clause 4 Context of the Organization: Analysing internal and external themes relevant to an EMS, as well as any interested parties, allows for an accurate picture of the organization's context. The next stage is to define the scope of the EMS and the processes it must consider.

Clause 5 Leadership: Top management is not just in charge of developing environmental policy and providing the necessary organizational structure. It must also exhibit commitment and participation by accepting extra responsibilities. This includes assisting employees and managers in implementing the EMS and implementing particular steps to encourage continuous improvement processes (CIPs).

Clause 6 Planning: This step entails identifying environmental hazards and opportunities and developing associated measures. Furthermore, the organization must identify and analyse its environmental characteristics, which include interactions with and impacts on the environment. Environmental objectives and initiatives must strive to address and mitigate the impact of environmental issues that are important to the company. The organization must also assess and verify compliance with environmental and other laws.

DO

Clause 7 Support: The resources required to properly support the EMS must be made available. This also includes establishing and enhancing environmental competencies. The organization must also design an EMS ISO 14001 documents appropriate internal and external communication processes.

Clause 8 Operation: Environment-related procedures must be led by the goal of reducing environmental effects. While this comprises in-house processes, it also includes upstream, downstream, and outsourced processes, as well as the processes of contractual partners, so the full value-added chain is examined. It is also critical to put plans in place to prepare for emergency scenarios.

CHECK

Clause 9 Performance Evaluation: The organization can assess how much its environmental performance has improved by monitoring, taking measurements, analysing, and evaluating key system metrics. Internal system and compliance audits, as well as frequent management evaluations, can all help with this.

ACT

Clause 10 Improvement: The goal of this stage is to continuously enhance both EMS and environmental performance by highlighting nonconformities and performing the appropriate corrective steps.
