What You Need to Know about Garage Door Springs

Nowadays, most people do not pay enough attention to their garage doors.  They think that as long as the doors are able to open and close as they should, then there is nothing to worry about.  But what if the garage door suddenly jams or stops working?  More often than not, the problem is related to the springs.  If not well-maintained, the springs of garage doors can break, and would have to be replaced.

Types of Springs and Safety Cables
Basically, there are two types of garage door springs: extension springs, which are situated on top of the upper tracks on the sides of the door; and torsion springs, which are located right on top of the door.  Both types are used in Jersey, IL Garage Door Springs, and have different features.  In particular, garage doors with extension springs have safety cables on the sides that run through the springs.  The frequent opening and closing of the door means that these springs are constantly under a lot of tension.  If a spring breaks and there are no safety cables, this could lead to serious injuries.  And so, make sure that your garage doors have safety cables installed.

Garage Door Brackets
Aside from safety cables, most Belleville Garage Door Springs are connected to brackets, which can be found at the bottom of garage doors.  These brackets, along with the springs, are constantly under a lot of tension.  For the inexperienced, fiddling with these brackets can be very dangerous.  Fortunately, the latest models have brackets that are tamper-resistant; thus preventing inexperienced users from accidentally hurting themselves.

Operating Doors Manually
As long as your garage door is opening and closing smoothly, then you shouldn’t have any problems.  Once it stops, however, then you need to identify the problem.  The first thing that you can do is to try and operate the doors manually.  Usually, this is done by pulling the cord joined to the arm, which connects the door to the rail trolley system.  If you try this, but the door still won’t work smoothly, then most likely the problem has to do with your springs.

Maintaining the Springs
Like most cases, bigger problems can be prevented by addressing smaller ones.  If you notice that your springs are squeaking or noisier than usual, then you can try applying some lubricant to see if this solves the problem.  Oftentimes, lubricating Clinton, IL Garage Door Springs on a regular basis can help to keep your garage door smoothly.  However, if you think that your springs need to be replaced, then it is best to hire a professional to address your concern.
