7 Maintenance Tips for Water Heaters

Posted by Samstores on March 15th, 2017

For your water heater to function properly and last for a long time, it needs regular maintenance. Maintaining your water heater does not have to be expensive. Here are some simple and economical tasks that you can do to extend the life of your water heater and decrease its power consumption.

  1. Lower the temperature of your water heater.

Adjusting the temperature of the thermostat to low-mid range can reduce your electricity bill and extend the life of your heater.

  1. Use water-saving shower heads.

Water-saving shower heads will reduce the flow of hot water. This will also decrease your heater’s effort to heat up water, hence increase its longevity.

  1. Put an insulation jacket on your water heater.

Insulating the heater would keep the water in the tank heated for a longer period. It may also reduce the heat loss by up to 40 percent, hence reducing energy consumption.

  1. Insulate the pipes too.

Insulated pipes will reduce the heat loss as water flows to your shower heads and faucets. This would reduce your heater’s workload and extend its life.

  1. Drain the tank.

It is important to regularly drain the tank from the sediments that build up in it. To do this, switch off the tank first and have the water cool down. Next, drain all the water, stir up the sediments, and then pour them out. Repeat the process until water from valve comes out clear.

  1. Replace the anode rod after every five years.

The anode rod is a small metal rod in your heater. Water gradually corrodes it, and if it’s not replaced, it may also corrode your main water heater. If you think that you can’t do this by yourself, get help from a certified plumber.

  1. Have your water heater inspected by a professional.

If you think that you don’t have enough knowledge or time to maintain your heater properly, it would be best to have it inspected by a certified technician or plumber every two years. This will help especially with complicated technical processes, and will keep your heater in good condition.

Aside for regular maintenance, it is also important that your heater is of good quality to begin with. There are online stores that sell excellent water heaters at lower prices. Choose an online shop that is recognized and reputable.
