In a desktop, you can always monitor it and the server is away from you and you cannot see them physically and it is shared between number of end-users.    In a desktop, you can do the backup within few hours and can do it whenever you want it.  The server backup is little more complicated where you need some kind of software to schedule it and to let you know that the backup activity has done.   Also, server backup process should ensure that the normal function of the server is not interrupted while carrying out the backup.
