“Take the time to mentally prepare yourself before you step on the mound.”
- Glen Mills, sprinting athletics coach from Jamaica.

For a sportsperson, it is imperative to take out the time to mentally prepare himself or herself before they go out to play. And in addition to being mentally fit, it is also essential to be physically fit. And in a game like Baseball, it becomes even more important for a pitcher to be both mentally and physically fit. Being mentally fit is something done in solitude, but this is not the case with being physically fit. To be physically fit, you need the best strength training for baseball pitchers.

Pitchers in baseball are constantly on a look-out to add speed to their fastball. This requires them to do upper-body workouts. But if they are looking to build strength in the arms like Mets goliath Noah Syndergaard or Dodgers Star Clayton Kershaw, it requires them to develop pitching specific strength training. It is important for them to go beyond just immediately applicable strength training and nutrition guidelines. There are three areas that the pitcher should focus on during strength training:

1.Legs: It is important for a pitcher to develop his legs and glutes. This helps them increase the leg drive that is necessary to generate velocity.

2.Upper back: As previously said, a pitcher should not focus only on the arms and shoulder strengthening exercises, but should also focus on their upper back. As a result, the pitcher’s body allows their arms to reach faster speeds as it becomes more capable of safely decelerating alter the release.

3.Core: Keeping your abs tight and immobile is very important which requires them to strengthen their core. This helps them if and when they encounter resistance.

To build these three areas, there are some specific exercises too which help them in building their strength which includes

  • Squats
  • Deadlifts
  • Lunges
  • Bent over rows
  • Pull-ups
  • Landmines
  • Medicine ball throws
  • Straight bar-benching
  • Upright rows
  • Front and side raises
  • Push-up variations
  • Bench pressing variations

It is very important for a pitcher to take ultimate and overall care of his/her body as without a healthy one they would not be able to stand on the field. There are many books available on the same which can guide you better on the topic of building pitching specific strength, power, muscle and above all how to throw harder. So, empower yourself and explore more regarding the same. Begin with your training today and be an expert. As you know, the expert today was once a beginner.
