Why Pickleball is becoming more popular in America

Pickleball was invented fifty years ago but is now gaining a whole lot of popularity. But before we discuss why this is happening, let us have a brief introduction to the sport. Pickleball is said to be invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard and his two friends who wanted to find something to do on a boring afternoon. They had a badminton court but could not play because they had lost the shuttlecock.

The three friends, therefore, decided to improvise. They thus took a wattle ball, some solid plywood and then lowered the badminton net and began playing what seemed a mixture of tennis and table tennis outside. Although there are contradicting stories about why it was named Pickleball, it is said that Joel and his friends named it after a pickle boat which usually comprised of leftover sailors.

The sport then later developed to be a mixture of table tennis, lawn tennis, and badminton. The rules are almost similar to those of lawn tennis, but they are much easier. The ball is light, plastic and has holes on it while the paddles are all smooth just like those of ping pong. They are the Best Pickleball Paddles yet. But why is it such a popular game? Here is a list of factors we believe led to the growing popularity of Pickleball in America now.

Pickleball Paddle

1.    It is an easy game

Before much is said and done, Pickleball has proven to be an easy game that can be learned and played by anyone, regardless of their skill. Even though Pickleball has advancement stages like many sports, the bottom line is that the rules are easy to grasp and almost anyone can learn the basic techniques of the game. Because of this simple fact, a lot of people are drawn to it as a great way to spend their weekends and leisure times.

A Pickleball court can also be set up almost anywhere. If your backyard is small, that should not be a problem, as the game does not need too much space anyway. And if it gets too hot or if it starts to rain, do not worry, you can easily set up your court in the garage, or even living room. Just make sure to remove all the breakables from your way.

2.    Its fan base

The majority of the players of Pickleball are retirees. They somehow found this game as a good way to stay active and fit, and at the same time pass the time since they do not have much occupying them. Because of the low level of the net, and the small size of the court (one half of the tennis court), the game allows for its players to last a long time playing.

The players also stick close to the ground without much jumping and running, making this just perfect for the older generation. Most sports such as hockey and football and surfing may not be too accommodating for the older generation because of the intensity required to play. This is different for Pickleball.

The ball is light, and so are the paddles. This means that the players do not have to put a lot of force in hitting the ball and therefore they won’t have to strain too much. This is not to say that the younger generation cannot play. In fact, it is even more appealing to the younger generation because all it needs is interest. The rest can be developed as you continue playing.

3.    It is a good fitness option

Pickleball may seem like the perfect exercise regime for anyone who wants so much to keep fit but hates the gym. When playing this game, you will be getting enough cardio, while resting your joints and knees. You won’t have to run a mile or lift heavy weight. You have to stay on the court long enough to get your cardio in, and you are good to go! No wonder so many people are being lured in by the game.

4.    It is a social game

Now, this may also be one of the top reasons why Pickleball is on the lips of almost everyone. If you are having a whole weekend with everyone at home and you do not want them spending the entire day glued to their TV and phone screens, then Pickleball is one way of having a fun yet productive way.

You will be able to spend more time and bond while having fun. If you do not choose to play in your backyard; you will be able to make so many friends. If you go to recreational centers or parks that have a Pickleball court set up, you will get to meet and know very many people. Since the game is played in doubles and in shifts, you will get to know at least 4 people by the time you finish a match. And is that not incredible?

5.    It is Addictive

Perhaps it is because of its easy nature or its socializing advantage; the USAPA chairman says that the reason why the sport has gained so much popularity is that it has an addictive power to it. Like a drug, when you start, you never seem to want to stop.

His sentiments are shared with many other players and members of Pickleball clubs. It can be said that the game engages you both mentally and physically and by the time you are done, you are left feeling better. Much like therapy.

6.    It is present in Recreational Centers and Parks

Unlike many other games that require having specific membership and training, Pickleball is easily accessible. Due to its rising popularity, most recreational facilities and parks have included a Pickleball court, allowing you to have leisure games whenever you want. The hub and center of all Pickleball activity are in North Florida. This is where the annual Pickleball tournaments are held.

The best part about this is that a lot of people will get to be exposed to the game and with time the popularity and perhaps importance of the game will grow exponentially. It will also allow more people, of all generations, to explore this sport and help it develop.
