Is it Time to Upgrade My Fusebox ?

Posted by Alba 2 on August 27th, 2018

Every home or business has a consumer unit (sometimes known as a fusebox or fuseboard) but how do you know when it is time for a new fuseboard? Here are some good pointers:

  1. It contains re-wirable fuses or old cartridge style fuses instead of MCBs (minature circuit breakers - see below)
  2. It has no RCD protection - see below
  3. Fuses keep tripping
  4. The fusebox is so old it has wooden casing or backing
  5. You are adding further circuits to the original install in your home e.g. an extension, adding extra sockets etc
  6. You are making alterations to the electrics in your kitchen or bathroom.
  7. The fusebox contains asbestos flash pads

What is the Average Cost of a New Fuse Box?

The price to install and test a new fuse box/consumer unit depends on the number of electrical circuits in your property. However, it typically costs between £300 and £500.

How Long Does it Take to Install?

This will depend on the age of the property and wiring. On average it takes between half a day and a day to install and test a new fuse box/consumer unit. Your electrician should also check that the earthing and bonding are up to the required standard.

What are MCBs?

Miniature Circuit Breakers replace old style fuses. Each circuit in your property should have a MCB. These devices are sensitive to changes in current and switch off the power automatically if a fault is detected.

What are RCDs

RCDs (Residual Current Detectors) are devices that are designed to switch off the power immediately if there is an earth fault. This prevents electrocution and electrical fires by cutting the flow of electricity when leaking current is detected.

Is Metal Cladding Required?

Since Jan 2106 all newly installed fuse boxes must be clad in metal casing. This is to prevent fires caused by loose wires inside the plastic fuse box causing the casing to overheat and catch fire.  Metal casing is much better at containing such fires.

Keeping your property and those in it, safe from the risk of electrocution and fire is crucial. If you have any concerns about your fuse box, always get a good, qualified electrician you can trust to check it over.
