Medical Treatments available for treating Osteoporosis

Are therapies and medicines effective in the treatment of Osteoporosis

Like natural ways, medicines and therapies can also heal Osteoporosis. These help in increasing the bone strength and reduces the chances of fractures. They should be taken as per the advice of the doctor.

Osteoporosis is weakening of the bone. It is important to prevent the damage to the bone because it is irreversible. Apart from the natural methods, the prevention and treatment are also possible with the help of some therapies and medications. The main purpose of therapies and medications are to increase bone density.

Following are the treatments for increasing your bone densities –

  1. Estrogen hormone therapy - This therapy, have shown positive results by increasing the bone density and prevention of bone loss. This estrogen is available as a skin patch or as an oral medication. Progesterone and estrogen are mixes together for oral medication. However, this therapy has increased risks of heart attack, breast cancer, and stroke. Therefore, doctors do not suggest this therapy for long.

  2. Medications – Medications also prove to be a treatment of Osteoporosis. Bone is a living dynamic structure. It is built constantly and reabsorb as well. It results when the rate of resorption in bone exceed the rate of building. These medications prohibit the resorption and increase the bone density.
  • Bisphosphonate - This decreases the risk of hip fractures, spine and the wrist fractures. This improves the T score as well. To reduce the side effects and enhance the absorption, bisphosphonates are used. The medicine should be taken empty stomach 30 minutes before the breakfast. The medicines should only be taken with water. Avoid vitamins, minerals and iron supplement.

  • Alendronate - It is an antiresorptive medicine. Alendronate is for the treatment of osteoporosis. It has very few side effects.

  • Risedronate – It is the other bisphosphonate antiresorptive medications. It is also good for the treatment of menopausal osteoporosis. It is unlikely to cause esophageal irritation.

  • Ibandronate – It is a phosphate for the treatment of postmenopausal and osteoporosis. It is available for monthly and daily use as well. We can use them every three months.

  • Zelodronate – It is an antiresorptive medication.  Patients will be using Tylenol along with these medicines so as to prevent muscle pain. It should not be taken during and prior to the pregnancy.

  1. SERM- These are also good for treating and preventing the Osteoporosis. Some of them are:
  • Raloxifene – It belongs to the category of SERM. It can reap the benefits of estrogen. Therefore it acts as an estrogen for the bones and avoids the side effects of estrogen. One of the major side effects of estrogen is that it can result in uterus cancer.

  • Calcitonin – It is a hormone for treating osteoporosis. It comes from several animal species. These are in the form of injections. It is good for increasing bone density. They also prevent fractures.

  • Teriparatide – It is a synthetic version of the human hormone. It helps to regulate calcium metabolism. It reduces the spine and hip risk fractures. After a two year course, the patient will require therapy to maintain the bone density.

  • Denosumab – It is an injected antibody.  It also plays an important role in preventing the thinning of the bone. It is taken twice a year. It increases the bone density and reduces the fractures. However, they have high risks of infections and low blood calcium levels.

The other treatments include prevention of the long-term use of Cortisone. One can take tablets of calcium and vitamins to further improve the condition. However, one should consult the doctor before taking any medications.
