Listening helps to solve problems, build relationships, and improve accuracy. In every aspect of our life, active listening is essential, at work it ensures that we record few errors, at home; it helps the family leave in harmony and saves the marriage from collapse, or, for instance, improves relationships between parentsand their children and gives them a chance to develop their own skills.

Steps to becoming a better listener for success

  • Maintain eye contact with the speaker: Maintaining eye contact when listening to someone is an active ingredient for effective communication. Good eye contact shows that you have a genuine interest in what the person is saying. Always listen with the intention to understand.

  • Always ask questions: When listening to someone, try to ask questions. Asking questions gives a better understanding of the term being discussed. Also, ensure that you only ask one question at a time because asking too many questions creates confusion. Do not interrupt the speaker when trying to ask a question instead allow him or her to pause or finish the teaching or conversation.

  • Try to be attentive and relaxed: Try to be attentive to what the speaker is saying. Mentally screen out any form of distraction, don't focus on the speaker's speech or accent, don't be distracted by your thoughts or feeling. When your mind starts wondering, gently try to refocus your mind on what the speaker is saying.

  • Create a mental picture of what the speaker is saying: When listening, it is essential to allow your mind create a mental image of the message you receive. Try to concentrate and remember the keywords and phrases used by the speaker.

  • Feel what the speaker is feeling: During a conversation, it is important also to feel what the speaker is feeling. Express sadness when the speaker feels sad and joy when the speaker feels happy using your facial expression. Showing this expression depict that you are an active listener.

  • Give feedback to your speaker - Feedback is critical in communication. It shows that you truly understand what the speaker is saying.

In conclusion, listening to others is a vital tool for success. Listen even when you are bored by the speaker and try to focus your mind on the discussion. One good thing about listening is that it can be learned if you desire to.
