The class

The introduction to management class has been informative in understanding the basic concepts of management in organizations. In particular, I have learned management definitions, functions of management, differences between management and leadership, becoming a good manager as well as challenges in becoming a good manager.

Leadership

Leadership is a process of coming up with sound decisions which inspire a team to make members follow a particular towards desired goal performance.  Hence, it is a tool for objectivity, inspiration, and encouragement as it motivates others for organizational pursuits.   Hence, leader differs from managers because managers only involve themselves in the organizational coordination of efforts and resource allocation for maximum efficiency.  While leaders motivate others to act as they wish, managers can make people do thing out of choice or force. As a result, good leadership requires commitment, strong communication skills, influence as well as positivity in initiating outcomes.

My Strengths

Since my high school education, I have engaged in many leadership activities. In almost all situations, I have always emerged successful despite some challenges that any leader must experience. Commitment, Confidence, and Creativity have been my primary strengths that have propelled my leadership success as they always make me inspirational and strong in challenging situations.  Personally, I do not share a belief in giving up.  The reason is that giving up lowers the morale of team members and diminishes the trust from team members. I always stay focused and committed when assigned to an issue. Commitment always helps to avoid diverting my responsibility. It also helps me to eliminated inferiority fear while pursuing challenging goals. My second strength is commitment. I always know that if I there is a need for my team to work hard, an example must come from me. I take similar responsibility to those of my team members as a way of bringing team oneness. Working with them always boosts their working morale.  This strength always helps me in enhancing communication and knowing my team challenges. Being committed attracts respect and instills hard work among members. My other strength is creativity.  I always create solutions for complex situation through group involvement.  I always try alternatives in challenging circumstances.  In this case,   I do use the available capabilities to deal with critical issues. Hence, confidence, creativity, and commitment remain my major strengths.

My Weaknesses

One of my greatest weaknesses is working under close supervision.  I always hate working under close supervision because I always take it as lack of confidence in my abilities. Working under close supervision always hinders me to exercise my discretion on creativity.  The other weakness is the inability to work on multiple tasks at the same time.  I always like to deal with one situation after the other. When assigned to various duties I always find it difficult to deliver in all of them. I always concentrate on one assignment while failing other parts. My last weakness is the inability to manage anger.  I have never tolerated laziness in my team, and whenever a member shows such sign, I always lose my temper.   This is a weakness on my part because the inability of a team member to work well can be due to different legitimate issues.

Description of Leadership Experience

Completion of my high-school education provided me with an opportunity to practice leadership in the work environment. I was lucky to get a job in a bakery in our town.  Since I had learned some management courses, I was chosen to lead a team of 20 members who worked in the production department. Since the company operated 24 hours, I was forced to divide the group into two. One team would work on day shift while the other on the night shifts.  It was a good idea through some members objected it. As a leader, I took the responsibility of informing my team that a shift would make each of us gets time for rest.  Before, dividing the group, I decided to ask members if we could come up with a three-man standby team that would help in case some shift members got some private emergencies.  The team members were very happy at my suggestion.  We came up with three groups, one for day shift, and another for night shift and a standby force for weekend and emergency. I also assigned myself in the night shift. I also assured my team that all shifts would be rotational.  All team members were happy for my wisdom and since that day; they would run to me in the case of an issue. We always solved the problem as a team.

The Leadership Skills I Used

The first leadership skill I used was creativity.  This was involving team members to develop a working plan based on shifts. As a leader, I was aware that I would be difficult for us to work with two shifts. I was mindful of the fact that members would get sick or other emergencies that would lead to absenteeism. Hence, my creativity as a leader helped to prevent such occurrences. The second leadership skill which I applied was commitment. As a leader, I did not sit back and assign all the responsibilities to my team.  As a matter of fact, I included myself in a night shift.  This was aimed at working as a role model for my team. This was a motivating strategy that mad my team members to like me. Commitment and involving team members in issues was my last leadership skill. I ensured that work was continuous without absconding and confusion. This was aimed at meeting the targets of our employee.  Involving other team members in decision making helped in preventing resistance in decision implementation
