Introduction

The play that I will be analyzing in this assignment is the “other desert cities” that was written by Jon Robin and premiered on the Broadway in January 2011. It was later transferred to Broadway in November 2011, which marked the Broadway debut of a Baitz play. I had the occasion to watch the play on one of the weekends last holiday while visiting my uncle in Texas at the city lights theater. The main elements that I especially appreciated in the play are on the take an assessment of the diverse issues that can be said to be specific to an American family, with the fun and captivating performances keeping me glued to my seat.

The play is structured to take place in the spring California on the eve of Christmas 2004. On this day, Brooke Wyeth has come home to ensure that she shares her new book with the rest of her family over the Christmas period having been away for six years. The book is about her brother Henry who had radically protested against the war in Vietnam, which hiss final act of protest being by committing suicide. Brooke blames her parents who encompass the right wing Hollywood Republicans for the fate that befell her brother and asserts that the memoir is going to develop a structure that will assist the discussion of this event in their family history. Once the parents become aware of the content that is in the book, a battle erupts, permanently threatening their relationship. Brook is exceedingly nervous as the family reads the book on Henrys’ life although nothing could have prepared her for the shocking truths that come from her family during the discussion of the book.

The play was about the issues that are found in families encompassing the agreements and disagreements as well as the desire to keep some things a secret and never to be revisited. Issues as affection by Wyeth on her brother as well as aggression to get the issues discussed are some of the attributes that are very evident in the play. The desire by Brooke to get the truth about the issues that were affecting her encompasses some of the elements that I easily identify with as the aggression to seek to the truth is one thing I have always nurtured. I greatly empathized with the depression that Brooke had faced after the death of her brother against the family’s desire to keep it a secret. The one thing I have managed to take away from this play is the fact that it is compelling to address all the issues affecting a family, ensuring that everyone is comfortable with the state of things.

The excellent use of imagery in this play as the reference to the war fought in Vietnam, illustrating the political divisions that led to the battles offers an excellent assessment of the current reality in the society making the play very captivating.

Conclusion

Other desert cities are a play about the issues characterizing the contemporary families, with the best case being seen in the disagreements and quarrels that threaten the relationships in the families. Overall, I believe the play offers an excellent view of the contemporary world and politics, making it an excellent piece to study. The captivating nature of the presentation makes it memorable among all the parties that see it. It is imperative that any disastrous issues in families are addressed adequately to ensure that there are no cases of depression.
