The use of private plates was considered a luxury for the rich and famous. Today almost everyone can afford to have a private registration.

The DVLA has been making sales in auctions and online for years now with billions of dollars in sales.

TYPES OF PRIVATE REGISTRATION PLATES

In order to understand more about personalized registration you should have some knowledge about the different types of plates available. The plates available are current, dateless, prefix and suffix.

1.Current plates

This plates are the plates that are in use now for new cars. They have been in use for almost two decades. The numbers on the plates are arranged as follows:

2-letters, 2-numbers and 3-random letters

In total seven characters. The numbers usually indicate the vehicles age.

2.Dateless
Dateless plates are also referred to as cherished number plates. These plates were in use in the UK until 1963. They do not indicate the vehicles age hence the name dateless.

3.Prefix
These plates were in use right before current plates. The first letter on the plates indicates its age hence the name prefix.

4.Suffix
These plates were in use after dateless and were replaced by prefix. The last letter indicates the age of the car hence the name suffix. The first letter was ’ which means any car with a letter A was in use between 1963 and 1983.

Where do I buy personalized registration plates and how much?

Private plates can be bought online, in DVLA auctions. The cherished number plates are not available online and most of the time you will find them in auctions.

The cheapest plates go for £250 while the most expensive ones can go for up to £2,500 online. The prices are not the same in auctions and there is no an estimated cost for a plate there.

Do’s and Don’ts of Private registration plates

There are legal measures that are put across by the DVLA.
•Do not display the wrong age of your car on the plates
•Do not use a plate that has not yet been assigned to your car
•Do learn more about a plate before buying it
