How to make the perfect hamper

Although they may seem traditional, hampers are always a great gift idea because they can be customised for the recipient, especially if you decide to make your own.

Budget

Before you start creating the hamper, it is important to decide on a budget so that you don’t go overboard when purchasing the packaging and contents.

Beautiful hampers can be created on any budget – it just requires a bit of creativity and careful shopping to ensure the best value for money.

Theme

Once you have your budget set, decide on a theme for the hamper. This will avoid having to shop for unnecessary extras and will allow you to narrow down products.

In order to do this, think about what your recipient likes and what the gift occasion is.

Here are some theme ideas:

• Food theme (chocolate, wine, beer, cheese, baked goods)
• Pamper theme
• Tea or coffee theme
• Sports theme
• Gardening theme
• ‘Get well soon’ theme.

Packaging

One of the most enticing elements about a hamper is the way it looks; therefore, perfect presentation is key.

In order to nail the presentation, think about which packaging you want to choose. Hampers can be assembled in a range of different boxes and baskets depending on how big your hamper is and what you want it to look like.

A great tip is to choose packaging that snugly fits the hamper contents to avoid spending extra money on space fillers.

Products

This is the fun part. Now that you have your packaging, budget and theme down-pat, decide on what products you want to include in the hamper.

When choosing the contents, think carefully about what the theme is, and which products can complement each other.

For example, if your hamper is going to be wine based, consider including some nice wine glasses, coasters and a corkscrew to accompany the wine.

Another great way to measure whether a product is worth including is to think about whether the person would splurge on buying it for themselves. If it’s something they’d like but they wouldn’t purchase it for themselves, it is a perfect gift to include in your hamper.
