Going for maral hunting in Mongolia is certainly fun and adrenaline pumping. Since maral or red deer as commonly known is in no way like other deer species due to their stout and strong built, most hunters enjoy hunting them.

However, the fun and adrenaline-pumping experience can be doubled, if not tripled, if you know a little more about red deer. To help enhance your maral hunting in Mongolia, we have pulled together a list of few facts about maral you should know about:

Fact 1

They have various subspecies and each one of them is hard to identify. Red deer can only be identified by their antlers and body. Shockingly, a few of these subspecies have antlers growing to one metre in length.

Fact 2

The largest species of red deer known to human is named the Caspian red deer whereas the smallest species of red deer are called Corsican red deer.

Fact 3

The female red deer are called hinds and male red deer are known as stags. When it comes to the size of two members of the same species, there is a drastic difference and male are generally bigger than females. However, it depends on the quantity of food consumed by the deer and the quality of the food available. Make sure you make no mistake in identifying male and female when hunting maral in Mongolia.

Fact 4

There have been a few subspecies of maral in which the stags - male deer - grow mane of hair around their neck, especially during the autumn season and this gives them a royal look.

Fact 5

Stags generally have stronger neck muscles than hinds and this is why hinds can never be seen fighting or locking horns with stags.

Fact 6

Only stags have antlers, and they, interestingly, shed them every spring.

Fact 7

Maral’s antlers have living tissues with a thick protective covering called velvet. This velvet has blood vessels that provide the antlers with necessary calcium and other nutrients. Make sure you don’t forget to look at them after you hunt one on your maral hunting trip in Mongolia

Fact 8

Wanna know why stags have a strong muscular built? Interestingly, during the mating season, which lasts only for three month, stags’ testosterone levels start increasing and that rapidly builds their muscles. They usually mate from September to November.
