120+ Amazing Part-Time Jobs for Teachers

Posted by Leanne Moore on May 13th, 2019

It's that time of year again.

The time when schoolchildren everywhere are throwing away their notebooks and forgetting everything they learned the last nine months.

And the time when teachers...start looking for a summer hustle.

There are always the usual suspects when it comes to teachers' summer jobs. Working retail in a store, waiting tables, or even working at concert venues. But these days, there are so many options that teachers have to make money in the summers that it's a good idea to review some of the best, non-traditional summer jobs for teachers.

Some jobs let teachers' entrepreneurial spirit shine forth. Rather than working for someone else over the summer, why not start your own side business? Put your flexible summer schedule to use to do the grunt work of starting your own business. You could even continue the business part-time into the school year to earn even more income.

Or, take advantage of the number of apps out there that allow you to earn money with just a few minutes or a few hours out of your week.

Listed below are my top suggestions to consider as a summer employment.

1. Freelance editing. If you're good with words, hit up job boards like ProBlogger.com or FreelanceWritingFAQ to look for freelance writing gigs. Market yourself as a subject matter expert in your content area and apply for jobs online. Good employers will pay an article, depending on the word length.

2. Drive with Uber and/or UberEats. Really, any number of these driving apps or service delivery apps can be a great way to earn money in your spare time over the summer. With Uber or Lyft, you can download an app on your smartphone and see who needs a ride. You pick them up and are paid through the app. With companies like UberEats or GrubHub, you download an app and see who has ordered food that needs to be picked up and delivered. You're also paid through the app. With each type of service app, you're paid tips, as well.

3. Rent a room with Airbnb. If you have a spare bedroom or will be traveling over the summer, consider renting out a room or your apartment or house with Airbnb. It's a great way to make pretty passive income. Especially if you can hire a neighbor or a friend to clean the space after each visitor, you'll simply travel over the summer and make income on the people renting from you. Summer is an especially great time to make money with Airbnb because so many people travel and are looking for fun, affordable accommodations.

4. Flipping furniture. If you have an eye for what makes a great piece and a bit of skill re-working furniture, try flipping furniture this summer. When the weather's warm, you can find tons of yard sales and flea markets to sniff out great finds. Many times, people don't have the knowledge or skill to refurbish an older piece, and so they want to get rid of it and sell it for a cheap price. If you know how to rework a piece, you can buy something very cheap and sell it for quite a mark-up. By the end of the summer, you can earn quite a chunk of change.

5. Teach overseas. This is an especially exciting summer job because it allows you to explore far-off places in addition to earning extra income. There are quite a number of reputable organizations that offer short-term placements for teachers. The benefits--traveling all over the world--are certainly hard to beat!
