I happened to have a chance to watch this marvelous play in the Royal Opera House, where they played last year. And no words can describe the grandeur I witnesses there. The co-production between the Royal Opera House and San Francisco Opera is a pictorial brilliance. There couldn’t have been a better choice than operatic tenor Gerhard Siegel as the Witch.

The Antony McDonald's production gives a new turn to the character of the witch. The play later reveals a peculiar bald scientist dressed in a lab coat under the costume of a witch. Perhaps the production’s intention was to make it a modern adaptation. Whatever the reason, Siegel completely divulged into his character throwing out vocals compelling with the Witch's flamboyance.

Our protagonists Hansel and Gretel, portrayed by Hanna Hipp and Jennifer Davis are no doubt a mischievous pair. With Hipp’s husky mezzo and Davis's graceful crescendo, the playful and heroic acts are all the more inspiring. Hipp’s silver-toned delivers the symbolic clarinet to Davis's musical tweaking of the bird. Other mentionable of the opera version production are soprano Haegee Lee in the role of the Sandman spreading a fragile, creepy tone over the character. Michaela Schuster as the siblings' step-mother Gertrud, whose bulky voice highlights motherly annoyance and exhaustion. She succeeded in spurting heart-felt high notes and body postures that typify her frustration. Eddie Wade fights with certain high notes as Peter, the Father, but projects a nurtures an uptight and nervous standing symbolizing his fatigue stressing how "hunger is the best kind of cook".
