Hit By a Drunk Driver? What Do You Need to Do Afterwards?

Posted by Tim O’Hare on August 30th, 2019

Driving in Dallas can already be a challenge, add a drunk driver into the mix, and the number of accidents starts to rise. Getting into a car accident can be scary. If you’ve been hit by a drunk driver, there are important steps you should take to protect yourself.

  1. Involve the police

The first step is to call the police. Don’t be conned into exchanging information and leaving it at that. Make sure the drunk driver remains on the scene until the police get there. Police will be able to evaluate the driver’s intoxication levels.

  1. Videos and photos

Most people have a smartphone these days. Use the camera function to record the entire interaction after the accident if possible. Having photos and video of the accident scene is persuasive evidence if you need to go to court.

  1. Get contact info for witnesses

You need to gather all the contact information for all the witnesses you can: don’t rely on the police to do it. You can ask someone at the scene to do it for you, as well. Police frequently fail to document witnesses unless there’s been a very serious injury or fatality.

  1. Follow your doctor’s instructions

Following the accident, most people end up in the emergency room. If the injuries aren’t severe or life-threatening, then typically the person is discharged with instructions to follow up with a primary care physician or specialist. Following your doctor’s orders is critical in an injury claim.

  1. Hire an experienced personal injury lawyer

Always investigate any attorney independently before hiring them. Look at their previous cases, results, and how they interact with their clients. Peer-reviewed sources can be helpful.

Following these steps can help you get the best possible outcome for your case.
