Your phone can do much more than WhatsApp, you know? For those curious about learning new languages, just go to the app store, download some apps and be happy. Today there are free options to please everyone, all you need is an access to the internet connection and you’re good to go, for those living in the United Arab Emirates just like me, Du Home Internet is the best option so far.

If you want to start with the most commonly used languages, such as English and Spanish, it is a good idea to download some of the apps below to begin your studies. Most of them offer daily challenges and are easy to study, even for those who have little time a day. The good thing is, as it is by mobile, you can practice anywhere: on the bus, on the couch and even in the bathroom.
Some apps offer extra features that get paid, so you need to pay attention before you click on everything, but all are free to download. See the list:

1) Duolingo. It is currently the most popular option for learning a new language. The purpose of the app is to make language learning a fun activity, and it offers rewards when you reach your daily goals. There are many language options available. For those who speak only Portuguese, you can study English and Spanish. Available for Android and iOS.

2) Babbel. Available for the study of several languages, it is ideal for those who need to train vocabulary of common everyday activities. It makes use of images, pronunciations and example sentences to facilitate learning.

3) English with LinguaLeo. Suitable for children and adults, the app has an innovative proposal for learning English: playing. It also offers memorization sheets, word translation and grammar tips.

4) Busuu. The app is available in 12 languages, including English and Spanish. You can learn languages with everyday elements. In the app, you can practice doing exercises and correct the lessons of other users to earn points and trade for rewards. If you want to do more than one language you have to pay.

5) BBC Learning English. This option is best for those who already have some knowledge in English and want to expand the vocabulary. You can read news and translate each word, and have an option to listen to English text.

6) WLingua. The app is all in Portuguese and offers a level test for those who already have some knowledge in the language, as well as a built-in English-Portuguese dictionary. All activities are automatically saved and you resume from the last lesson when you reopen the app. You can also choose to listen to audios in either the US or British English version. One downside is that not all activities are free (the app offers a paid version).
