Substance Addiction Recovery – Recovery Isn’t as Easy as You Think

Many people make the mistake of thinking that opiate addiction recovery is a simple task. They are wrong! Recovering from opiate addiction is a life long task, much like recovering from being an alcoholic, or any other drug. It is something that is always in the back of your mind, and something that many people will struggle with for the rest of their lives without proper holistic rehab treatment.

You see, when someone becomes addicted to opiates, they train their brain a certain way. The worst part is, they train their minds in many cases to believe the only way that they can be content and happy is to take and use opiates. So, even when people stop taking and abusing drugs, they still struggle with opiate addiction recovery for a very long time.

One of the hardest parts of recovery is the fact that opiates are so readily available. Doctors write prescriptions for them like candy, street-level dealers move more painkillers than most pharmacies, and recreational drugs such as heroin are easily obtained by most people out there. So, on the days that a recovering opiate user is having a “rough day,” sometimes it’s all they can do not just to go and get a fix.

One of the key components to recovery is to have a strong support system or at least one person that you can lean on when you are struggling. For many people, this support comes in the form of a spouse or a close family member. However, that person has to understand what you are going through and not be willing to bargain with you. In most cases, those that have fallen off the wagon of their addiction recovery say that their support person gave in and agreed with them that it would be OK to do it JUST ONE MORE TIME. As soon as those words are said, it is incredibly easy for an addict to make themselves believe that they can use opiates just that day to get through a tough time, and then continue to be clean the next day.

If you’ve ever gone through opiate addiction recovery yourself or been a support person for someone going through recovery, leave a comment and let everyone know how difficult it is, and maybe share a tip or two that might help people that are suffering right now.
