Tonsil Stones: What are the Causes of their Appearance?

Tonsil stones can be defined as a benign infection that causes the formation of “white balls” in the cavities of the throat.

Tonsil: These pellets, which often have a whitish or a yellowish color, are an accumulation of mucus and food debris which can cause a lot of discomfort and result to bad breath.

Causes tonsil stones?

Infections

When an infection occurs in the area of the tonsils, the cavities open up and tonsil stones begin to form or settle.

Mucus

As previously mentioned, the tonsil stones are usually an accumulation of mucus and food debris.

To prevent excess mucus in the throat from becoming repulsive “white balls”, it’s best to gargle with salt water. This is ideal to clean the area and prevent mucus buildup in the tonsils.
