In the old testament breeches were worn by priest during religious exercises within the temple.

DEUTERONOMY 22 : 5

Now let us examine the scripture that has been causing this great strife.

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: For all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy GOD.”

                                KJV Deuteronomy 22:5

was translated from the original Hebrew verse. This is the original text.

In examining each word making up the verse, the word “pertaineth in the KJV is translated from the Hebrew word “Keliy” which means article or vessel, weapon, armour or instrument.

The word “man” in the verse was translated from the Hebrew word “geber”, which means strong man or warrior. Not just an ordinary man, but one who has the ability to fight in war.

It is also worth nothing that during those times when Moses was leading the Israelites to the promise land occupied the Canaanites who were pagan worshippers; God commanded them not to practice the religion of the Canaanites. During the worship of their goddess “Astarte” their women wore their men’s armour before practicing the religious rite to their deity and in this garment they danced round their deity and offer sacrifices to her. So, maybe this was the reason for the law given to the Israelites ad written down by Moses.

In the context of the Canaanite story and the word “giber” and “keliy” we can rightly say that what Deuteronomy 22:5 means is that the women should not put on that man’s (warrior) garment (shield, sword, armour, spear or any weapon of war) because all that do so are abominations unto the LORD GOD.

ADAM AND EVE’S GARMENT

After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, they realized that they were naked and clothed themselves with sewed fig trees.

“And, the eyes of them both were opened; and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig trees together, and made themselves aprons (girdles)

Here we are told that they made aprons to cover themselves not trousers, skirts, robe, gowns, or wrappers but aprons. Some say;

  1. We do not know the type of apron they wore because the scripture did not specify clearly
  2. Adam’s apron is different from that of Eve.
